What tests might a mechanic do for
a pink slip? NRMA MotorServe’s
Con Kavalieros offers some insights
TO REGISTER YOUR CAR each year, usually
if it’s more than five years old, the RMS
requires an authorised mechanic check it for
roadworthiness. An eSafety Check (as it’s
called nowadays) can involve much more
than seeing if the engine is in good repair.
Here are some tests you may not know about:
Ever noticed the little brake tester printout
stapled to your eSafety Check? It’s from a
machine that tests the stopping efficiency of
the car – how long it takes to stop after you
apply the brakes and how much pedal force
is required. It’s expressed as a graph of how
much g-force is generated. RMS parameters
are loaded into the machine and a car won’t
pass if its stopping efficiency is outside
The beam of your car’s headlights must be
set at a certain height and angle so they don’t
dazzle other drivers at night. A headlight
tester has a gauge with an acceptable range
drawn into it. This is a useful tool, especially
for vehicles that have been involved in an
crash. It not only measures the angle and
height of the beam, but also the intensity of
the light passing through the lens.
If a car has had an aftermarket window tint
applied, the inspector might check the tint to
ensure it’s legal. A tint calibration tester is
held on the outside of the window and it
measures the amount of light that passes
through. Side windows can’t admit less than
35 per cent of the light or the car won’t pass.
